Age and Its Disappointments

After the triumphal resolution of what I'd call the American story arc of "Desolation Island", "The Fortune of War", and "The Surgeon's Mate", Aubrey and Maturin are forced to deal with the downside of aging. Jack is assigned to blocade duty, an odious and lengthy chore, in a ship of the line that is only barely seaworthy. He's forced to deal with the fact that as he rises in rank his freedom is curtailed, and doing one's duty is bitterly disappointing and frustrating to him, his friends, and crew. Both Aubrey and Maturin are beginning to feel old and tired, and a little frightened as well. After a nearly unending string of missed opportunities, disappointments, and frustrations, the story ends with climatic storm of violence which is a form of relase.
But despite all the ill humor and irritability nearly everyone in this instalment of the Aubrey saga is feeling, there is a surprising amount of humor, such as when Jack bought out the stock of a deceased fireworks maker at a good price for gunnery practice. Indeed I think I laughed more listening to this book than any of em.
I am distressed to see that Patrick Tull's version no longer seems to be available. I've not yet heard Simon Vance, and perhaps he does a good job. But to me Tull is THE voice of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. He gives us the good doctor's Irish, and in this book the Scottsman does sound Scottish. And his reading . . . his reading has the musicality of poetry, yet he is reading prose. He puts a great deal of care and the proper amount of acting into his readings. I cannot find enough superlatives to describe Tull.
