MICHAEL CALVIN is one of the UK's most acclaimed sports writers. He is currently chief sports writer with the Independent on Sunday. His last book, The Nowhere Men, won the Times Sports Book of the Year prize in 2014. Great to read these insights

Great to read these insights. Many 'words of wisdom' from current and recent managers, who really do face constant threats to their positions. It's actually quite interesting to read interviews with guys like (Sack) Alan Pardew when he was still optimistic about Newcastle, then Brendan Rogers when he was at Liverpool. Their viewpoints may be wide-ranging, but the decisions on whether they stay or go are actually quite blunt.

This is a good look at the people behind the job from a personal and psychological point of view. Liked the way it works its way through the leagues, styles and personalities. Also gave me some management insights. It still however didn't quite lift the lid completely, maybe because there is no perfect manager just a question of being the right person in the right place at the right time. A bit like us then.

Grade 1-5 This lively story of the inventor of the potato chip begins with Crum's 1830s childhood in the Adirondacks, where his feisty streak gave him resilience in the face of prejudice against his Native American/African-American heritage. He combined a passion for cooking with a perfectionist bent and was hired as a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, where he created popular wild game and fish dishes. His encounters with fussy and demanding patrons led to the innovative idea of thinly sliced, deep-fried potatoes as the ultimate French fry, and his fame spread rapidly. He eventually opened his own restaurant, Crum's Place, where everyone was treated equally, regardless of race or wealth. Taylor notes that the story is based on the more substantiated existing facts about a man whose life is largely undocumented. She writes clearly and compassionately, and treats topics of culinary history and race relations in an inviting manner. Crum is multidimensional in depiction, and readers can practically taste his crisp, freshly prepared chips. Morrison's richly colored acrylic illustrations have a comical look; the elongated figures shown from unusual angles create stylized exaggeration and burst with life. As a young man, he became an excellent cook and was hired as a chef at a renowned restaurant in Saratoga Springs, frequented by high society. Once, responding to a persnickety customer, Crum retrieved the dish of French fries, whittled them into very thin slices, and cooked them in hot oil, creating the forerunner of the potato chip. Later in life, Crum opened his own restaurant, where everyone was treated equally, regardless of skin color, gender, age, or economic status. Providing enough historical explanation for younger students, this picture-book biography describes dramatic moments that reveal Crum's creativity, artistic temperament, and relentless pursuit of perfection. An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

UK membership of the European Union has come under fire of late and it seems the resulting do-we-stay or do-we-go controversy is likely to bubble under for some time. In the meantime though, practitioners tackling any aspect of European Law will welcome the arrival of this comprehensive handbook on this vast and complex subject.

Recently published by Edward Elgar Publishing, this is a completely updated and augmented new edition of a classic text and as such, is certainly a must-have handbook for all practitioners involved in any way in European Union law.

Co-author David Edward is Professor Emeritus in the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh and has served as a judge of the European Court of Justice. He and his colleague Robert Lane, also at the School of Law, Edinburgh, have created an authoritative text of almost 1,000 pages, they also point out that the book is a brand new statement of EU Law written now by Lane.

Written with the aim of stating the law as simply as possible and providing quick access to the primary materials, the work has grown from its original hundred pages to its present length, an indicator if there ever was one, of the increasing scope and depth of EU law.

The book begins with a thoughtful and incisive historical overview, referred to in the Foreword by Eleanor Sharpston. As Advocate General, Court of Justice of the European Union, Luxembourg, she declares that this piece of writing “should be compulsory reading for anyone wanting to sound off publicly about ‘Europe’,” adding that “the reader is given a real understanding of the contradictions that make up the EU: idealism and pragmatism, federal vision and the ferocious defence of national interests”.

Further chapters provide expert cover and analysis of the key issues pertaining to European Union law, including for example, the constitutional structure of the European Union, the Treaties, the institutional framework, the key case law of the Court of Justice and of course, much more.

Copiously footnoted, the book reflects the developments that have taken place since the Treaty of Lisbon and there is extensive reference to primary sources, particularly in the book’s five appendices.

Those doing further research will also appreciate the almost 200 pages containing the tables of cases, treaties and legislation, plus the detailed table of contents and extensive index. The law is stated as at 1 September 2012.

The previous reviewer is getting boring

As I search for texts for learning geostatistics, this gentleman's standard rant appears everywhere, copied verbatim, as welcome as a stubborn pop-up ad. He seldom discusses the specifics of the book in question, rather, he just dismisses the whole field. Well as long as we're at that level, I'd remind him Kurt Godel showed that it is impossible using usual methods to be certain that the axioms of arithmetic will not lead to contradictions. So I guess we should can anything based on arithmetic. I wonder if he also haunts the theology book review pages touting the lack of empircal proof for god's existence? It would be better to post one's intellectual grudges elsewhere.

Stan Gibilisco is a superb writer whose books on electricity and mathematics have helped readers for years to understand the universe around them. My kids absolutely love all Usborne Books. The "That's not my" series is a personal favorite of mine. The pages are crisp and each page has a neat touchy feely item on it. This book has held up through my two year old biting and throwing. Very good book.

I consider this one of the best of the touchy-feely books. Each page seems to encourage our son to reach out and touch the different textures. His favorite seems to be the triceratops with the too rough horns.

Research into the roles of trust in our society has offered a broad range of often conflicting theories. Some theorists maintain that trust is a social virtue that cannot be reduced to strategic self-interest; others claim that trusting another person is ultimately a rational calculation based on information about that person and his or her incentives and motivations. Hardin argues that we place our trust in persons whom we believe to have strong reasons to act in our best interests. He claims that we are correct when we assume that the main incentive of those whom we trust is to maintain a relationship with us—whether it be for reasons of economic benefit or for love and friendship. Hardin articulates his theory using examples from a broad array of personal and social relationships, paying particular attention to explanations of the development of trusting relationships. He also examines trustworthiness and seeks to understand why people may behave in ways that violate their own self-interest in order to honor commitments they have made to others. The book also draws important distinctions between vernacular uses of "trust" and "trustworthiness," contrasting, for example, the type of trust (or distrust) we place in individuals with the trust we place in institutions

The starting point

Yes, it is an academic study of the key concepts. And it is an almost perfect one; it gives a broad overview of other interpretations and then formulates its own, very powerful one, it makes the bold claim that we can understand trust in terms of self-interest (for most writers these two terms and naturally inconsistent, and they are wrong) It is just perfectly written, while most books on trust mumble about everything and nothing, this one is to the point and precise although not technical, everyone can read it. If you need a starting point to study the complex idea of trust, the clarity of Hardin's study makes it perfect; this one will be more useful than ten others, usually either blurry or trivial.

A Defense of Very Narrow Perspective

There has been so much research on trust in the past decades as computer-mediated communications have become integrated into our lives. The purpose of this work is primarily to reject those complementary perspectives as competing and invalid.

To Russell Hardin, trust can NOT be placed in any automatic system. Trust is NOT behavorial. In fact, trust is only legitimately studied as a mechanism within political philosophy using a particular set of methods. Not surprisingly, those methods are the ones used by Russell Hardin, political philosopher.

What we have here is the worst kind of territorial academic argument - more interested in dispute than enlightenment. This book will be good if it is at least the 20th book you plan to read on trust. Otherwise the narrowness, and the resulting required contortions in logic, will only confuse.
