What Does Matt Epstein Know That We Don’t?

One summer day, Matt Epstein applied to 20 different companies on LinkedIn to find work. He waited.

And waited.

He never heard back a single response. Fear began to creep in. He couldn’t find a job because of one simple reason: He was blending in with the masses. Panic began to race through his mind. "Seriously, what the hell am I doing here?" He took a deep breath, stepped back and assessed the situation.

And then a stroke of genius hit him.

He was going to be bold. Inspiring. Outrageous. Awkward. Funny. Unbelievable.

It was in this moment Matt Epstein created the most viral and successful job campaign of our lives. By the time his campaign was finished, he had amassed these results:

•Received over 400,000 unique visits and 720,000 page views for his site
•Received over 450,000 YouTube views
•Received 20,000 Facebook Likes, 4,800 Tweets and 4,100 Google +’s
•Received print, online and TV coverage across the world from TechCrunch, Gizmodo, to the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal

Nagesh Palepu overcame being nearly deaf at a young age and went through an incredibly journey as his career started as a cashier at McDonald’s and continues today as the CEO of a highly successful company today.

Sarah Rossdale started working in a tiny ice cream stand and fought her way to her dream job at Disney, all while competing against her own roommate.

Nelson Wang went from Labor Foreman to a Partner Manager managing a multi-million dollar territory of business and built a LinkedIn brand so powerful that he had recruiters from Google, Apple, Verizon, Paypal, and HP reaching out to him.

Geared towards younger marketing types
By P. Thompson
This e-book did provide a good laugh in the section where it recommended spell-checking and grammar-checking your resume. Because this book has quite a few problem sentences. It really needed somebody to review it before publishing to catch all the errors. And about the last third of the book was formatted improperly for my Kindle Touch -- I could see the questions, but not much of the answers, unless I made the fonts as small as they will go. All of that should've been fixed long before publishing.

The book is a little too much "You can do it!" for my taste, and it does tend to focus a bit too much on college students who may have graduated without marketable skills, and without knowing what they want to do (besides use social media). But there are some very good tips sprinkled throughout the book that I will definitely make use of. One example is to customize your resume for each company you send it to, and tailoring your objective to that company. This is a very simple thing, yet I often forget to do it.

The book's main premise -- that you need to do something special to make yourself stand out to get hired -- is solid. Overall, the book has more fluff than good information, but I did pick up some good tips from the book, and it didn't cost me a cent. Three stars out of five.

Good advice sprinkled in the midst of a ton of fluff

The title of this book begged a closer inspection and I quickly downloaded and read it. As a hiring manager at my company and no stranger to the traditional hiring process I was eager to gain insight from an expert in the field. In this regard I was very dissappointed in the book. Don't get me wrong, the content was not a complete waste of time; there were plenty of good advice nuggets sprinkled throughout the pages, but the fluff-to-good advice ratio is close to 100 to 1, and the good advice that is present in the book can be easily found through a quick internet search. The author's background is narrow, and he imparted the impression of an opportunist/conman rather than an expert in the field. I have no doubt that most if not all of the 5 star reviews on Amazon are placed by friends and family. The premise that Facebook, LinkedIn, youtube, etc, can be used to supplement and in some cases replace the traditional resume is presented in the first few pages, but anecdotes and vague advice follow for the remaining pages. If the price of this book is free, then go for it, however if and when the price is increased you should stay away from this book. The investment in time required to skim through the pages is a high enough cost to pay!

For all those thinking, "Just another self help book"
By dk5438
Whenever I hear about a job finders book, I always think "some writer is trying to capitalize off of the unemployed." A good friend of mine -- college grad, years of experience, hard worker, good personality -- got laid off last year had been frustrated looking for work. Resume mailings, interviews, job fairs, even just random networking. Suddenly just last week that friend got a job. One that he didn't settle for, but one that he wanted. I read this book not because I am unemployed, but because this friend told me after reading this book it changed his whole mindset. Still, I was skeptical. Maybe it was just a coincidence that he read this book (one of many "you-can-do-it" books) and the right opportunity happened to come along at the same time. It's short, so I had an afternoon and read it.

For all of you skeptics like me, I can guarantee you...it was not a coincidence. I haven't read Nelson's Wang's other book so I don't know too much about him, but this book, honestly, does not make you feel better. That would be a waste of the reader's time. What Nelson Wang does in this book is outlines a full, essential plan of attack of how to be different in a way that will get you HIRED. It's really quite simple, easy to read, easy to follow. Definitely a pleasant surprise.
