A good reference book for those looking to reconnect with Yule and the Winter Solstice in general.

I would like to thank Llewellyn Worldwide, Ltd. for an ARC of this book in exchange for an open and honest review.

This is a great reference book for any Pagan seeking to reconnect with the celebration of Yule and the Winter Solstice. Although I already celebrate the Solstice in question, I still got a lot of inspiration from ‘Yule’ as it not only gave me some new ideas to incorporate into our own celebrations; it encouraged me to keep doing things “my way”. So many books of faith and celebrations seem to dictate that their opinion is the ONLY way it should be done. ‘Yule’ encourages you to find your own footing on the path, giving helpful pointers along the way but allowing you to seek the balance right for you and your area of the faith.

It did feel a little odd reading this book on a very hot spring day, with Yule months behind me and Ostara just last weekend… but that’s the fault of the reader, not the book. ;-)

I will say this book is more focussed on Yule in the Northern Hemisphere as a lot of the rituals and festive ideas are closely linked to Christmas time. As a Pagan of the Southern Hemisphere, I celebrate the Winter Solstice/ Yule near the end of June. And so I did get some good ideas from this book, but not everything could be carried over as smoothly. This is not meant as a negative comment as you should write to what suits you and from what you are accustomed to. If the author comes from the Northern Hemisphere, they should focus the knowledge they’re sharing on those experiences. Again, different footsteps on the same path.

The only other minor piece of constructive criticism I would give is I was a little disappointed in the food recipes. I’m a whole food, organic food, make everything from scratch person and so find recipes that are for a packet of this and a tin of that… they didn’t sit well with me. But, again, different footsteps on the same path. We need to find the balance that is true to ourselves and so if pre-made foods work for the author, then it’s how it should be in her book.

The ARC did contain a couple of typos and misspelt words too, but I’m sure they were picked up in the final edit and I never mark a book down on such things as I’m good for a typo or two myself!

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes I would. Just because it has a strong connection to Yule in the Northern Hemisphere, this book is still a very good reference book for anyone wanting to get back in touch with the Winter Solstice. Even those also located in the Southern Hemisphere like myself. It gives us a broader look at the world and our Pagan faiths within it.

Would I buy this book for myself? I might. I do have some books that follow the Wheel that are more Southern Hemisphere orientated that work for me… but I did enjoy reading ‘Yule’ and so I won’t say no just yet. If I find myself thinking back over it and wanting to remember some of its advice next June… perhaps I will still get it. It has also made me keen to read the other books in the Wheel from this publisher as I feel they could contain the same fair guidance and inspiration.

In summary: A well written book of reference for anyone wanting to get back in touch with the celebration of Yule and the Winter Solstice. And, although aimed more for those in the Northern Hemisphere, it is still a good reference books for Southern Hemisphere Pagans too. It’s a good nudge in the right direction, rather than a strict statement of how it should be. A perfect book to embrace into your faith, and to help you find more balance in how to live.

I totally love this little series of books and Yule

I totally love this little series of books and Yule, the latest of the eight major pagan festivals, is no exception. Does it dig into the deep, dark, interesting past of Yule in great detail? Nope, but it wasn't meant to. It is meant to be a overview of the festival with a bit of history, lots of cool ideas to help celebrate the time of year and the festival itself. Fun recipes that can be adapted to suit the persons personal needs or at least spark some ideas. If you need a quick ritual idea, craft idea, want a logical correspondence to evoke the mood and feeling of the season, this book is for you.
It isn't trying to be anything it isn't. It is a great series for an intro to the sabbats.

A Beautiful Book

No one can deny that this is a beautiful book filled with mouth watering recipes and exquisite photographs. But what really sets this particular cook book apart are the wonderful, heart warming stories illustrating Chef Vikas culinary journey.

However, what I found to be most compelling is the simple yet subtle complexity of the flavors. Most of the Indian foods that I've been exposed to have had so many different ingredients and spices in one dish that it's difficult to distinguish any one particular flavor note and thus eventually everything tastes basically the same. Not so with these recipes. I love that there are only a few key flavors in each dish which allows the spices and ingredients to really stand out. It's about time someone has written an Indian cookbook in a sophisticated manner that really showcases the myriad of spices found in Indian cuisine. This truly is a stellar, knockout book that I would recommend for anyone who enjoys cooking, especially those who love cooking for others much like Chef Vikas.

Brilliant!!!!

Wow... this cookbook is fast becoming my go to for home cooked meals. I have always been a huge fan of Indian food,(and have had the pleasure to eat a Junoon), but always found it way too intimidating to do at home. This book has changed that for me. It really is fun, and makes cooking Indian food so approachable. I was able to stock up on a few key spices, and since then, have been excited any time i have tried out a new recipe. The book itself is filled with wonderful pictures, and has left me in awe of Chef Khanna, and how he is able to create such depth to flavors. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Indian food, you will not be dissapointed.

great flavors

so far tried the chicken tikka masala, the spinach and potatoes (though subbed paneer for potatoes), the chicken samosas, and the cilantro chutney. all excellent. no shortcuts, which i like in a cookbook...especially an ethnic cookbook.

Susan Fowler is one of the world's foremost experts on personal empowerment and has spoken on the subject in all fifty of the United States and more than twenty foreign countries. This book both freed and empowered me

I HIGHLY recommend Susan's book! As someone who coaches and mentors for a living, this book gave me new insights and practical suggestions to find my people's inner motivation. The thought that everyone we work with is ALREADY HIGHLY MOTIVATED could change the way we work with people. Her explanations of the 3 psychological needs people have to be energized and work at their optimal level have made me rethink some of my methods. Susan emphasizes the difference a great coach can have in creating an environment where self-regulation flourishes.
"People WANT to thrive," Susan says. The key is self-regulation. And a great coach/employer/mentor plays a significant role in creating a workplace that fosters our people's self-regulation. I learned I was not the source of my people's motivation, but my role can be crucial to helping them take responsibility for their own motivation.
This book is helpful for anyone who has influence in the lives of others, whether as a parent, teacher, employee, coach, mentor or encourager. I felt both freed that I was not responsible for another's choices, and also inspired by the thought that I could play a part in empowering them to work out of their own motivation. This is a book I will be re-reading and using as a text in coaching people.

There are better books on the topic.

This book explain certain things really well. Most people will agree with idea that three psychological needs--autonomy, relatedness, and competence--are necessary for motivating people. So this part is good. Author further presents the idea of MVP (Meaningful, Value, Purpose) as a way to self-regulate. This is good too.

Having said this, I find it an oversimplification to think that one can always find ways to align employees goals with company goals. The problem many times is not the work environment or lack of self-expression at work. If given a choice, majority of people would not want to work. However, they work because they need to pay for their bills and health insurance. Because of this difference in goals, external incentive system is necessary. If there were a few examples/case-studies that showed how intrinsically one could motivate such individuals towards organizational goals, then the claim that external incentives were wrong would be appropriate. Otherwise, it overlooks important nuances and makes unsubstantiated claims.

The last part covers some case studies about people who are known to help people self-motivate. By far, this was the weakest part of the book. For example, Phil Jackson's example should have discussed a case or two where he was able to change the performance of a player. Attributing career long success to a coined word without facts and arguments seem superficial to me. This is a common problem with all case studies. I would rather read one case-study that goes in depth and walks through how one player's or employee's performance got improved because of proposed framework.

5) Soft Sell, 4E: The New Art of Selling (Soft Sell: Use the New Art of Selling to Create Opportunities & Close More Sales)
6) Thinking, Fast and Slow I suggest this book, because persuading or motivating others requires quite a bit of self-regulation. This book has a good theoretical underpinnings and covers why we fail to self-regulate.
7) The Discomfort Zone: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations Into Breakthroughs (BK Business)

Why and how we need to reevaluate traditional beliefs and practices in order to understand what motivation is...and isn't

I am among those who are convinced that people cannot inspire other people; however, they [begin italics] can [end italics] inspire them in one or more of several various ways. Sharing a compelling vision, for example, as when Martin Luther King, Jr. departed from his prepared speech and shared his dream. It is also possible to inspire others by setting an example, by appealing to their sense of justice, and/or explaining what the consequences will be if a serious problem (especially a threat) isn't resolved

Presumably Fowler understands all this much better than I do (in fact, I'm certain she does) and in this brilliant book, shares a wealth of information, insights, and counsel based on decades of her real-world experience in combination with revelations from recent neurological research. She provides motivation mini-case studies involving five quite different people encountering quite different challenges who responded effectively to them by taking an approach uncharacteristic of their leadership/management style. Fascinating stuff.

In the Epilogue, Fowler then focuses on ten "Masters of Motivation": Phil Jackson, Colleen Barrett, Mike Easley, Billy Yamaguchi, Gary Ridge, Beth Scalone, Matt Manion, Margie Blanchard, Scott Rigby, Richard Ryan, and Edward Deci. ("Dr." is Fowler's suffix for Scalone, Blanchard, Rigby, Ryan, and Deci. I have deleted it because I have no idea if it refers to M.D., PhD, or D.Ed.) All of these women and men have made effective use of the science of motivation to achieve great success for their respective organizations and, in process, for those with whom they have been closely associated. Jackson, for example, has played on or coached 13 teams that won a National Basketball Association championship. Jackson is frequently referred to as the "Zen Master" (perhaps you saw the Audi television commercial) because he makes effective use of unconventional tactics to teach his players self-regulation through mindfulness. Scallone is owner of the North County Water and Sports Therapy Center, a sole proprietorship. Her ability to fill the psychological needs of those entrusted to her care is of incalculable value to them, of course, but also in many cases to their loved ones. To her great credit, she also has a long-tenured, dedicated staff who also personify servant leadership.

The first consists of those who have supervisory responsibilities and are determined to become much effective helping to increase the personal growth and professional development of those entrusted to their care. The second consists of those involved marketing who are determined to be much more effective when attempting to create or increase demand for the given offering. Finally, I think this book can be of incalculable value to academic teachers and athletic coaches - working with teams and/or with individuals - who want to be more effective when attempting to ignite self-motivation.

That said, I am certain that there is much of great value for [begin italics] anyone [end italics] to learn from the new science of leading, energizing, and engaging. Just about everything anyone needs to begin or expedite that journey of self-discovery is provided in this brilliant book. Congratulations to Susan Fowler on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

Required for college

I gave this a 3 rating because the book is a 2 but the rental experience was a perfect 5.

I was really happy with my rental experience with Amazon. I was able to keep the book for the length of my class and saved over 50% of what I would have had to pay if I bought it.

The information is good, but the organization is confusing. All throughout the book the art is crazy to the point of distraction. The art is not the point of the book but it is just so annoyingly awful that it was a constant distraction from reading. Nutrition science and art really doesn't mix. I wish they would just skip the pictures and charge less for the book. In one page toward the middle of the book, there is a huge illustration graph that has nothing to do with the topic and takes up the majority of the page.

Usually I wouldn't care so much about the visuals but people who write these textbooks seem to forget that we have to actually read this stuff, and all of their extra fluffy bulls*** just makes it a more difficult read.

Prescriptions for calm not easy to fill

A Calm Brain is written by neurologist Dr Gayatri Devi who has thought long and hard about calm, investigated it, absorbed it and has the skills to write a very readable book about it. She has all the credentials and the ability needed to write a book like this. She has done a good job. Then why not a five stars rating?

The book has two shortcomings shared by most books of this genre. The first is the lack of distinction between the destination and the path to get there. Second, more important, the book provides prescriptions for calm that are not easy to fill.

Let me explain.

Here is the portrait of a calm person. He (or she) goes to bed with no help from sleeping pills or other drugs. He never scrimps on his sleep. He gets adequate sleep every night and gets up with no help from an alarm clock. He welcomes each morning calmly, slowly pouring his mind and body into the day. He hugs his spouse with whom he has long lasting close ties. His partner offers both companionship and romance. He then leisurely walks to work; along the way, he smiles at a stranger and stops to pet a dog. When he gets to work, he does one thing at a time. If he needs something from someone, he does not email or text; he just walks over to the other person's desk to chat with her face to face. Even on a hectic day, he manages to create downtime. He laughs frequently. If anyone offends him in any way, he is quick to forgive and forget. He doesn't follow the clock. He eats when he is hungry, sleeps when he is tired and wakes up when he is rested. He has sex as often as he can and hardly watches television. The tapestry of calm woven by him is his own.

Wouldn't we like to be him, even though he seems to be from some sort of parallel universe, one with which we may not be that familiar?

Well, believe it or not, Dr. Devi's prescription to achieve calm is to do all those things that we believe an idealized calm person would do. My earlier description of a calm person is actually a prescription for becoming a calm person written by Dr. Devi. The prescription boils down to this: If you want to be calm, imitate a calm person. Maybe she is right. Maybe there is no way to calm, calm is the way.

That leads to the second shortcoming of the book: its prescriptive nature with not much thought to whether the prescription is fillable. How does one do all the things that were so painstakingly put together by Dr. Devi? Let's say I'm a divorced, middle aged, unemployed, isolated, single mom with no particular social skills, how do I suddenly develop long lasting close ties, find the person who would offer both companionship and romance? Just as a new meditator is puzzled by the instruction "Empty your mind!", we are baffled all the things we need to do to be calm and silently exclaim "By what means? By what means?" Some of the things that Dr. Devi recommends are far more difficult to achieve than calm. If prescriptions like achieving "long lasting close ties" and having "a partner who offers both companionship and romance" are easy enough to achieve we won't have the divorce rates we do nor would people be stuck in terrible marriages for financial and family reasons. If the prescriptions are more difficult to fill than enduring the symptoms themselves, what is the alternative? If you don't have lasting ties, would frequent encounters with "consequential strangers" help? How practical is it to counsel a rape victim to simply "forgive and forget"? Can something else be done to achieve calm? Dr. Devi, unfortunately, does not pay enough attention to such practical considerations.

I don't want to leave the reader with the impression that this is a terrible book. It is not. It has many good points. It explores how vagus nerve helps to create calm. It shows why yoga works. It shows how inversion table can be effective in creating calm as some yoga poses. My point is, if one invests time reading a book that runs over 250 pages book devoted to a single subject, one should have a reasonable understanding of the subject. I did not get that feeling, although I did get some isolated insights on the subject.

In the end, calm needs to be achieved under less than ideal conditions. When our life is not going right, when we are isolated, when we miss an important flight by a minute, when we lose our passport in a hostile country, when we lose our jobs, when our spouse leaves us, when our children become drug addicts, and when we are in a terrible relationship. Requiring near ideal conditions for achieving calm is a contradiction in terms. When you read a book like When Chocolate Runs Out by Lama Yeshe or Peace is Every Breath by Tich Nhat Hahn, you smile. You see how calm can be achieved irrespective of what goes on in your life. Being calm does not and should not require the implementation of a whole slew of things. Buddhist psychology as exemplified in books like the one I mentioned shows that it is practical and within the reach of most of us. Anyone who aims to achieve calm through a long list of prerequisites is unlikely to achieve it.

Calm is not rearranging everything so we can be at peace. Calm is letting things be where they are or go where they may while we remain unperturbed.

Calm the mind and bring the overexcited body under control

Does this describe anyone you know -- or even yourself... The morning drag and grind, all groggy, until the coffee fix hits the tongue and bloodstream. Then the buzz. Then, evenings the body and mind are going... and they keep going, unless the help of a sedative is enlisted... sleeping pills, or alcohol. Sadly, that's all too typical in today's 24/7 work and activity schedule.

Really, the "core brain" is meant to take care of this revving-up and winding-down, according to Devi. But our artificially imposed ups and downs, with enforced sitting, fluorescent lights, and independence from natural cycles, short-circuit that response. In a world where slowing down is a mortal sin, the core brain never has a chance to do its biologically-assigned work.

A Calm Brain is all about recovering that natural ability to regulate the body and mind's natural "speed." We learn what signals the core brain seeks in order to properly do its job. We learn how to give it these signals, to consciously promote our body's innate ability to seek rest. It helps to approach bedtime strategically, making sure to prepare for sleep in the right way. We are so over-stimulated and prone to ignore our body's natural corrective functions, that even when we lay down to bed we may be unable to keep thoughts from spinning. So a book like Get Fit in Bed: Tone Your Body & Calm Your Mind from the Comfort of Your Bed by Tarbell and Kavanau can provide an excellent sleep-oriented adjunct to the habits and practices covered in A Calm Brain.

Highly recommended if you struggle with calming the mind and bringing your body's hyper rhythms under control. Especially important for those approaching their senior years, because stress has such the ability to wear away mental function and can contribute to dementia.

well written and very useful

I really enjoyed this book. I got the impression that a lot of complex research was sythesized for us and presented so we can understand it. There is a lot of great information about how to calm the brain (and body) and also why our brains go into more primitive modes when under stress.

Easy to read and very valuable information.

This is a great book for anyone feeling stressed and also for parents because it really explains the different modes that the brain can go into and how different ways of being with your child may help or hinder your child's well-being.
