MICHAEL CALVIN is one of the UK's most acclaimed sports writers. He was named Sports writer of the Year for his despatches as a crew member in a round the world yacht race and has twice been named Sports Reporter of the Year. He is currently chief sports writer with the Independent on Sunday. His last book, The Nowhere Men, won the Times Sports Book of the Year prize in 2014. Proud, his collaboration with former Wales and British Lions rugby captain Gareth Thomas, was named Autobiography of the Year in the Cross Pens British Sports Book Awards in 2015.

Really enjoyable read. stands alongside fever pitch, inverting the pyramid and the damned united in the pantheon of great football books. as a fan and student of the game for the last four decades, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Great to read these insights

Great to read these insights. Many 'words of wisdom' from current and recent managers, who really do face constant threats to their positions. It's actually quite interesting to read interviews with guys like (Sack) Alan Pardew when he was still optimistic about Newcastle, then Brendan Rogers when he was at Liverpool. Their viewpoints may be wide-ranging, but the decisions on whether they stay or go are actually quite blunt.

A bit like us then

This is a good look at the people behind the job from a personal and psychological point of view. Liked the way it works its way through the leagues, styles and personalities. Also gave me some management insights. It still however didn't quite lift the lid completely, maybe because there is no perfect manager just a question of being the right person in the right place at the right time. A bit like us then.

Grade 1-5 This lively story of the inventor of the potato chip begins with Crum's 1830s childhood in the Adirondacks, where his feisty streak gave him resilience in the face of prejudice against his Native American/African-American heritage. He combined a passion for cooking with a perfectionist bent and was hired as a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, where he created popular wild game and fish dishes. His encounters with fussy and demanding patrons led to the innovative idea of thinly sliced, deep-fried potatoes as the ultimate French fry, and his fame spread rapidly. He eventually opened his own restaurant, Crum's Place, where everyone was treated equally, regardless of race or wealth. Taylor notes that the story is based on the more substantiated existing facts about a man whose life is largely undocumented. She writes clearly and compassionately, and treats topics of culinary history and race relations in an inviting manner. Crum is multidimensional in depiction, and readers can practically taste his crisp, freshly prepared chips. Morrison's richly colored acrylic illustrations have a comical look; the elongated figures shown from unusual angles create stylized exaggeration and burst with life. This book contains sufficient detail to interest older students, and its appealing format will assure its popularity as a read-aloud for the primary grades. As a young man, he became an excellent cook and was hired as a chef at a renowned restaurant in Saratoga Springs, frequented by high society. Once, responding to a persnickety customer, Crum retrieved the dish of French fries, whittled them into very thin slices, and cooked them in hot oil, creating the forerunner of the potato chip. Later in life, Crum opened his own restaurant, where everyone was treated equally, regardless of skin color, gender, age, or economic status. Providing enough historical explanation for younger students, this picture-book biography describes dramatic moments that reveal Crum's creativity, artistic temperament, and relentless pursuit of perfection. Buoyant acrylic illustrations accentuate the absurdity of situations, depicting the jaunty chef, all angles and energy. Sources and an author's note are appended. This was a great read aloud for my third grade class

This was a great read aloud for my third grade class. I was able to teach character traits, feelings, and cause and effect all with one book. My students always refer back to this book, too, because they found it to be such an interesting story.

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

UK membership of the European Union has come under fire of late and it seems the resulting do-we-stay or do-we-go controversy is likely to bubble under for some time. In the meantime though, practitioners tackling any aspect of European Law will welcome the arrival of this comprehensive handbook on this vast and complex subject.

Recently published by Edward Elgar Publishing, this is a completely updated and augmented new edition of a classic text and as such, is certainly a must-have handbook for all practitioners involved in any way in European Union law.

Co-author David Edward is Professor Emeritus in the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh and has served as a judge of the European Court of Justice. He and his colleague Robert Lane, also at the School of Law, Edinburgh, have created an authoritative text of almost 1,000 pages, they also point out that the book is a brand new statement of EU Law written now by Lane.

Written with the aim of stating the law as simply as possible and providing quick access to the primary materials, the work has grown from its original hundred pages to its present length, an indicator if there ever was one, of the increasing scope and depth of EU law.

The book begins with a thoughtful and incisive historical overview, referred to in the Foreword by Eleanor Sharpston. As Advocate General, Court of Justice of the European Union, Luxembourg, she declares that this piece of writing “should be compulsory reading for anyone wanting to sound off publicly about ‘Europe’,” adding that “the reader is given a real understanding of the contradictions that make up the EU: idealism and pragmatism, federal vision and the ferocious defence of national interests”.

Further chapters provide expert cover and analysis of the key issues pertaining to European Union law, including for example, the constitutional structure of the European Union, the Treaties, the institutional framework, the key case law of the Court of Justice and of course, much more.

Copiously footnoted, the book reflects the developments that have taken place since the Treaty of Lisbon and there is extensive reference to primary sources, particularly in the book’s five appendices.

Those doing further research will also appreciate the almost 200 pages containing the tables of cases, treaties and legislation, plus the detailed table of contents and extensive index. The law is stated as at 1 September 2012.

The previous reviewer is getting boring

As I search for texts for learning geostatistics, this gentleman's standard rant appears everywhere, copied verbatim, as welcome as a stubborn pop-up ad. He seldom discusses the specifics of the book in question, rather, he just dismisses the whole field. Well as long as we're at that level, I'd remind him Kurt Godel showed that it is impossible using usual methods to be certain that the axioms of arithmetic will not lead to contradictions. So I guess we should can anything based on arithmetic. I wonder if he also haunts the theology book review pages touting the lack of empircal proof for god's existence? It would be better to post one's intellectual grudges elsewhere.
