Mixed Feelings

Just finished this book - It took me awhile to get through it. I enjoyed the developement of the main characters Sinnamon & Essence but some parts just did not make sense to me.

Then I was disappointed to find that this was a sequel to a book that is not available in print or on Kindle - so I have no background to understand the background of Gage & others mentioned toward the end.

May when the third part is released, it may tie up any loose ends for me or maybe I may leave feeling the same way I did with this.

I'm wondering what took me so long to read this book I'm just hoping to find out what's going to happen next read this book couple weeks ago still cant get it out of my head trust me you will not be disappointed.

This was one of the best urban books I have read this year. The author is very talented and has put together a book that is a true page turner. Once Sinnamon and Essence get together there is no stopping them until the very end. I love her relationship with Esco but I want to know how it plays out in the next book. Good job.

Good overall review of pharmacy calculations

This is a recommended textbook where I work. I like the fact that it teaches concepts vastly differently from the required textbook that I teach out of....Thus, students who are unable to understand one way may be able to understand after using this text. I also like that students can write and practice problems directly in this book.

Great Reference for Multiple Classes

Is this book a "have to purchase" resource? No. I would expect that any college student who knows any high school algebra would be capable of figuring out the majority of this material. However, the style of the book's practice questions is excellent. It provides multiple examples, then practice questions with solutions, then further practice questions with answers at the end of the section. I found this book to be useful through pharmaceutics, p-col, kinetics, and compounding.

Bottom line: if you are on a tight budget and like to learn by practice (with explanatory solutions) then I would not pass this relatively inexpensive resource up. Out of all the text a pharmacy student buys, this text was one of the least expensive and most used.

This is the third book from Bachour and the focus should be understood before purchase in order to appreciate it, or realize it's not for you. Fist, it is not a book about making chocolates. For those not familiar with Antonio Bachour, he is one of the most renowned American pastry chefs. So certainly the focus of this book will be about making pastries. Also, there is intentionally not a lot of explanation of professional insider technique. This book is written with the expectation that readers have at least a very rudimentary understanding of making pastries. The forward explains it more, warning that measurements are given in grams and professional terms are used. However, with some basic knowledge and an ability to follow written instructions well, it is possible for a home gamer to make many of these recipes. Also, these are very artistic deserts and not necessarily the kind of thing people are throwing on the table for dessert at Sunday dinner. The instructions are given in simple bullet points - again, without any additional insight or techniques. It's up to the user to make it happen. Could it have been more insightful to those who want to learn professional techniques? Certainly. But there is no claim about that here and this is not designed for the absolute beginner in the kitchen. That said, new cooks still might find tremendous inspiration and insight in this book.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I have provided a few examples of the pictures below, though it's hard without good equipment handy to do justice to the beauty of this book (glossy pages are hard to photograph). Though I provided more photos of the artistry, there are plenty of recipes and I have an example of the very simplistic explanations provided in the book. This is typical of the entire book and you can see plainly the focus on steps rather than special techniques. Make no mistake, this is also very much a culinary "ART" book. I think sometimes there is a feeling in the culinary book market that too many photos is a sign of a book not serious about the actual food. In this case I think the opposite is true. For me the extraordinary photos are a source of inspiration and I appreciated them greatly. Do I wish there were other aspects to this volume? Certainly. But I will not fault the book for defining its purpose and fulfilling that point. There is no false advertising, you just have to understand it. The contents in the form of recipes are actually written for students of patisserie, or enthusiasts as the editor claims. For those who have not yet entered that path, perhaps this will act as inspiration as you begin that journey.

Great book. Clearly targeted at professionals or advanced home bakers. My only qualm is that while the pictures are absolutely beautiful, they spine of the book is in the middle of every single picture. You can't get a great idea of what it's actually supposed to look like.

This book is fantasic! I was so excited when I got it in the mail. The recipes and instruction are beautifully written, I finally got to make one of his dulcey cake, it was outstanding, just make sure you buy a lot of Valrhona chocolate though !

History must be re-written

Despite the unfortunate lack of editing of this work, and the sometimes frequent speculative statements by the author, this is an important and well referenced work that is worth reading. The author makes a compelling argument for the origin of the "paleoamericans" who traveled to the Americas long before the "Mongolians" migrated across the Bering Strait (as once believed). As an American who claims both an African and a Native American heritage, I am deeply enthralled and fascinated by the author's accounts of the "mound builders" and their link to the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Apart from the works by Dr. Van Sertima and Dr. Diop, this book is unprecedented in its claims to the builders of civilizations that parallel the Olmecs and the Ancient Kemetic people (Egyptians), in areas including Illinois, Ohio, Massachusetts, and the Mississippi Valley regions of North America. I would highly recommend this scholarly effort to those of us who are continuing in the process of the "miss-education" of members of the human race, particularly those who have long been taught that the history of African people in America began with slavery.

Upon completing this book, one would have to ask how history has been allowed to be written as we know it today. With such comprehensive documentation by Dr. Imhotep, how could the contributions of the Pelasgians (Greece), Natufians (Canaan-present day Israel), Anu/Twa (North America),and the Skraelings (Scandinavia/Greenland) have been excluded from the pages of modern day history books? History must be re-written.

Profound and Clear Reasoning

If you have a basic understanding of evolution and that Africans migrated across the earth, this book will fill in many details. A great book with tons of evidence to support that Africans had long been in what we now call the Americas. Of course some European Americans will remain in denial, which is fine. It's 2012 and it's time to embrace reality.

Dr. David Imhotep's book has laid the groundwork for a total restructuring of American history. He has picked up the mantle from Ivan van Sertima, and tells a story that informs us who, really, the first Americans were - and they were a Black, African population. In this age of miseducation, Dr. Imhotep exposes the traditional lies about the role of African people in the Americas. He heeds the call of Cheikh Anta Diop, who stated that "the problem of the most monstrous falsification in the history of humanity by modern historians has to be solved". Part of the solution to this "monstrous falsification" is to unleash books by scholars such as Dr. Imhotep, whose tremendous research reveals the true history of Africans as they populated the world. This book is a must read for everyone interested in the truth of not only American history but world history; it should be in every classroom.

The Ultimate Study Version of the Qur'an

This is the ultimate study version of the Qur'an in the English language. Yahiya Emerick has given us a superlative translation of the Qur'an into a crisp, clear, and easy to read, modern English.

Interspersed throughout the text in a different font for clear differentiation from the Qur'anic text, Emerick provides enlightening vignettes that describe the historical context in which various passages of the Qur'an were revealed and that lead to a much fuller and deeper understanding of the Qur'anic passage under discussion. In addition, over 2,600 footnotes provide a wealth of commentary (tafsir) derived from the sayings of Prophet Muhammad, linguistic considerations involving the Arabic language, Arabic poetry, etc. Also supplementing the text are separate essays providing a biography of Prophet Muhammad, a discussion of how to approach the Qur'an, the ahadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) and their sources, the prophets recognized by Islam, Muhammad's lineage, chronologies regarding the revelation of the Qur'an and the life of Prophet Muhammad, biographies of Muhammad's wives and various of his companions and antagonists, etc.

For any Muslim in America who is not completely fluent in Arabic, for any college student taking a course in Islamic studies or comparative religion, and for anyone who wants a highly readable translation of the Qur'an with in-depth commentary, this is the first and foremost translation that should be gracing their bookshelves.

Superior But Not Perfect

Yahiya Emerick dedicated a big part of his life in creating his expounded translation of the Qur'an. The amount of time spent on research is obvious through his elaborate blocks of background information and footnotes. The "Extended Study Edition" is an excellent resource for extensive research for understanding the history behind the verses and how they were perceived at the time of the revelations. Emerick uses many hadiths [teachings of Prophet Muhammed (peace upon him)] and sunnahs [examples from the Prophet's life] to explain aspects surrounding particular verses.

I was pleased that Emerick disproved many myths about Islam; for examples, the myth that Islam forbids music, and the myth that adoption is unislamic. I disagreed with a few of his footnotes, however. I was particularly disappointed that he upheld the myth that, in Paradise, men will have perpetual virgins "only to please our carnal desires, which will be without restriction..." (n 48). Of course, in Paradise we presumably will be perfected, spiritual beings without sexual lusts. (I certainly do not want to go to a Heaven where people are living with the same unrestrained, sexual immorality as they are today.)

The book lacks user-friendliness on one point, which is that the chapter numbers are not at the tops of pages. In other words, if you opened the book at a random page, you would not be able to tell in which chapter you are reading.

Emerick created an above average translation of the meanings of the Qur'an. He has some fault, however, in grammatical skill and poetic use of the English language; therefore, the literary value falls short of excellence. The translation lacks some elegance as Emerick often misses the tone of the original Qur'an. In translation, reflecting tone is just as important as reflecting the meanings. Although the translation is superior to other English translations, it lacks the perfection that the Qur'an deserves. Still, Emerick is to be commended for a thorough and important contribution.

Review on 8th edition C&D Toxicology

As someone who has had several editions of this textbook, I can easily state this edition is the best so far. This is mostly due to the change of adding in the color tabulations (on the side of the text book making it much easier to find sections) and the addition of multicolor graphs, illustrations, tables, etc. The 7th edition had 2 color for everything - green and black.
For giving presentations, the DVD with full presentation graphics will prove to be a real time saver.
Otherwise the book continues to be an excellent reference for anyone that needs a current standard for toxicology. The text is organized well, it has an excellent index and is exceedingly well referenced as would be expected.
The new sections - regulatory toxicology and nanotoxicology are needed in the expanding field and Toxic Effects of Calories looks to be an interesting read.
For a scientific work, pricing is actually pretty reasonable and the editions only come out about every 7 years. Definitely the book you want on your desk, or available electronically if you have toxicologic questions that you need to answer.

A must for any Toxicology student! Being a PhD student myself, this is my go to. It gives you layered information by detailing how systems and classes of compounds work. It details single molecules/compounds when they are the classics or notable outliers. The information is very technical but readable nonetheless. Chapters are outlined in a sensical manner and if a section within a chapter doesn't apply to what you need/want to know you can jump past without feeling like you've done so.

Bottom line: if you're looking for a book to look in the index for specific toxins like a dictionary and get a readout on page 933, this isn't it. Try Book of Poisons by Serita Stevens and Anne Bannon

Great book for understanding how chemicals affect the environment and humans.

I purchased this book just to learn more about the fate of pesticides in the environment. The book is great for providing an overview of toxicology and discussing so many issues relating to measuring the effects of chemicals (all kinds) in the environment and in animal and human systems. If you really want to know how our bodies are affected by chemicals in our food or in the environment, spend time with a book like this instead of on Google. You will come away with much more accurate knowledge.
