Finding good information on ways to unleash creativity in a spiritual context is easy. Finding a way to sell creativity to businesses is another thing. I particularly liked the way the book encourages you to customize your own training program. A Great Read!

I liked reading Taken by me Twin Stepbrothers, all about Damian & Angel my stepbrothers and me their step-sister. You see I was adopted when I was thirteen and have always had two amazing stepbrothers that looked after me and really made me feel like one of the family! The author wrote an interesting story, and the characters bring the story to life. I'm back for a weekend visit and they brought me to the lake, now I'm thinking I should see if I can get a month off and stay at the lake with my stepbrothers! If you like taboo stories that are hot & steamy and make you wet, then this series is right for you! I can't wait to read book two.

This groundbreaking study finds that the intelligence, integrated skills and achievements of blue collar and service workers have been consistently undermined and marginalized by cultural stereotyping. Rose (Possible Lives) finds conventional assessment of intelligence tied to social class: to IQ tests that measure formal schooling rather than capacity, and judgments that elevate "mind work" such as teaching or surgery over so-called "body work" represented by hair stylists or plumbers. Rose demonstrates, through research and personal exploration of a variety of workplaces, that cognitive ability, including perception, judgment, memory and knowledge, is employed daily in the work of laborers like welders, carpenters and drivers. He includes an extraordinarily moving biography of his mother, who used timing, concentration, strategic efficiency and a high degree of social skills in her work as a waitress. He profiles vocational teachers such as Jim Padilla, who motivates and guides his student electricians while passing on the concentration, problem-solving skills and persistence necessary to success. Rose also provides an excellent overview of the academic-vocational divide and argues that its effacement is necessary for a more democratic society. Well written and perceptive, but never dogmatic, Rose's book puts an important and generally poorly covered piece of the U.S.'s sociological puzzle in bold relief.

Rose quotes a policy analyst: “How do you honor a student’s construction worker father while creating the conditions for his child to not be a construction worker?” Combining memoir (his mother was a waitress) with case studies, he also provides an excellent overview of the academic-vocational divide, though at times his overly scholarly descriptions of the work environment reflect this division. Generally fast paced and never dogmatic, however, Rose has certainly drawn an original portrait of America at work.

In the interest of full disclosure, the author quoted a sentence from my first book's introduction, so of course I'm going to smile when I read The Mind at Work.

Pirsig's book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, has a brief chapter about the genius of welding, a glimpse at how to do it with purity and art, without ego or excessive pride. Competence is its own reward. That's the sense I get from this book. The working class contains some real geniuses, who are not scholars in the traditional sense. Even so, they study. Real, real hard.

The intelligence of the average American working person is undervalued, because it's unseen. Good. It can continue to flourish in secret, exploited by its owners alone.

Working in an IT company catering to bankers I bought this book to help understand their lingo. I have to say it hasn't disappointed yet. It is also very up to date the latest IT/banking terms. If you were to read all the definitions in this book you would probably know more than you banker. A great reference. Buy it!

Whether you are a novice seeking to learn the fundamentals of banking, or an active professional who has just encountered an unusual term, you will want this book. Each definition is short (only a paragraph or so), but most contain links to other terms, so the reader can gain a progressively deeper understanding of how terms interrelate. I also like the frequent inclusion of dates (e.g., the year a particular law was passed). The definitions are authoritative--based on a number of leading accounting, banking, and financial entities identified in the introduction. It's worth far more than its bargain price. I look forward to the next edition (Year 2000?). Keep up the good work!

Although in dictionary form, it consistently relates the terms to one another so the reader will understand how the concepts interwind. Includes financial and banking terms.

Simple, Practical Steps To Effective Branding

I've been in business for over 28 years and there are many opinions on branding that in addition to being confusing are unsuccessful. What I like best about this book is the information is understandable with tremendous research behind it that proves the process works! Einstein said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." I feel confident using the three step process because it's simple, based on trends and common sense and easy to understand and explain. Most business practices and strategies never become that simple and that instills doubt in the mind of the business person and I believe that alone can kill a business. The information in this book is simple, practical, effective and confidence-building. I'm using it and have already recommended it to others!

A Brief Introduction To Bridge Resource Management

I am a Captain for a major US airline and have in the past taught Crew Resource Management extensively. I have also been involved with safety in the chemical processing industry, and try to look at best practices from numerous technical industries to bolster safety in my own. Many of the issues confronting aviation are found in very similar forms elsewhere, and much learning can occur across industries.

With that in mind I bought "Bridge Resource Management" by Rexford Penn. It is evidently designed to be used as a training aid or course supplement in a seminar format given the vast swaths of blank paper, largely with the heading "Notes" that proliferate throughout the book, boosting the page count significantly. I did like Penn's discussion on the importance of behavioral markers and non-technical skills (p. 21) but found the case studies to be the best components of the book. The case studies are great fodder for discussion and analysis (just like in aviation accidents) and while good, could have been more thorough. Given that the copy on the back of the book claims the book is "a comprehensive introduction and guide to Bridge Resource Management techniques for ships officers, watchkeepers and crewmembers," I expected much more in-depth analysis. A very useful case study discussed the loss of the "Braer," while the best of the case studies is the case of the "Cosco Busan" which struck one of the towers holding up the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The discussion of the elements of this accident was quite well done, and emphasizing the roles of the pilot and handover reports (which have direct analogues in aviation) was especially good. Sadly there was no diagram of the accident, which would have been particularly helpful in this case. This brings up a greater point. In many industrial accidents diagrams and illustrations are key to understanding the situation; while this book has some photos of vessels involved, it would be much stronger with pertinent illustrations relevant to the incidents under discussion.

I can see this book being a useful supplement to a course or seminar on BRM, but didn't find it to be a particularly compelling introduction to BRM as a standalone text. I will continue looking for more comprehensive texts on the subject, as I am still convinced that it's a worthy avenue of study, and if anything this book did reinforce that belief.
