The 1990s have seen some remarkable changes in geographical information (GI) provision and computer technology that have impacted on many of the activities that constitute planning in all its different forms. However, relatively few texts in the field of geographical information systems (GIS) and planning have been published since Henk Scholten and John Stillwell edited Geographical Information Systems for Urban and Regional Planning in 1990. This volume seeks to redress the balance by showing how GI of various types is being used in urban, physical, environmental, socio-economic and business planning contexts at local, regional and national scales with the assistance of GIS and modelling methods, and how the uses of GI and GI technologies have evolved over the last decade. During this period, a number of meetings took place in Europe in different locations organised initially by European Geographical Information Systems (EGIS, 1990- 94) and more recently by the Joint European Conference and Exhibition (JEC) on Geographical Information (1995-97). These meetings brought together members of the GI community from across the world to discuss GI research and GIS applications. One of the Special Interest Groups associated with the JEC gatherings was that on 'Geographical Information and Planning' and several of the contributions in this book have their origins in papers presented to the group's meetings.

Terrific, funny book - Hits a too little close to home?

This book is a hoot! Get it for your friends who are about to have kids, already have kids, or who are thinking about having kids! This book is written very straight -- the funny part is that all the horrible "advice" it gives you about how to go about traumatizing your kids is actually representative of what I see people doing to their children every day!(Of course, I never did ANY of this stuff to my three kids...uh...well...maybe a little...uhhh, chapter 4 and chapter 6!) This is part of a set of six books (that I saw together in another store) and all the titles are funny - How to get fat, How to drive like a maniac, etc. They make a great gift and look very cute lined up on a shelf -- the titles make people look at them twice! I recommend it for a good laugh and as a clever, surprising gift. Add it to a baby shower gift!

Hilarious and all too true!

In addition to being side-splittingly funny in places, this book is such a brilliant depiction of negative parenting, it's actually quite enlightening. They're not talking about obviously abusive characteristics; rather they shed excruciating light on more subtle and common contemporary parenting "styles" with chapter headings such as "Exerting Control: Your Child, Your Property," "It's all about YOU: Narcissistic Parenting," "Don't quit your day job: The convenience of neglect," or "Whatever they want: Indulgence begets entititlement." Wish I'd read this years ago. It might have helped spare my kids and me some pain.

I really thought that Traumatizing your children came naturally, but maybe for all those new age parents it's not so natural. It's a good thing this book is available to teach them how to terrorize their own offspring. My life wouldn't be the same without my parents having traumatized me.

As per the Cinematic references, my mother and I watched Mommie Dearest together when I was a young tot...wondering now if it was just so I would appreciate her that much more.

Read I'd visiting Bali

I was traveling to Bali and wanted to get a some historical knowledge. I enjoyed the historical fiction and the characters were enjoyable. At times the author droned on and on about things like an event that greatest people.

Starts Out Slow, but Gets Very Good

The book started out slow and I really had a hard time getting into it, despite being on my way to Bali for a 5-week stay. Nevertheless, I'm glad I persevered through the first 30% of the book, as it got really good and, by the time it was over, I was sad to see it end. In addition to telling a beautiful story about love (and, yes, death as well), the book offers some good insight into early 20th century Balinese culture and the dealings with the Dutch colonizers. I certainly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the colonial period of SE Asia/Oceania and also to anyone visiting Bali.

Gorgeous and compelling, just like Bali itself.

Characters beautifully imagined and set up early, so denouement of the puputan (mass suicide by the Balinese court) is almost anti-climatic.

I loved it and now there is Vicky Baum, I shall have to write my Bali novel in a completely different way.

About the Author

Exploring tolerance and understanding

I stumbled upon this thoroughly enlightening book at the end of my third year of living in a small bucolic town in the mountains of rural Japan. While it is intended as an overview and introduction to various things that can make the Japanese seem different and enigmatic to outsiders, many of the topics are discussed from their historical evolution, which helps to construct them in a much fuller and as a more complete figure. Moreover, the subjects covered are often unobservable to the casual visitor and neophytic foreign transplant, yet are central to understanding the Japanese character. Where I had just simply witnessed and pondered over many baffling and seemingly contradictory actions of the people whom I was residing amongst at first, after reading this book I came to understand them in a much clearer and tolerant way. Another result, incidentally, was it also helped ease me through an extremely delayed case of culture shock. We should note that problems arise not through stereotyping (which, despite our fanatical political correctness at times does tend to be accurate more often than not), but when we use these generalizations to assert a cultural superiority, or inferiority as the case may be, and to define differences as being anything other than such.
This wonderful little book is clearly written by Japanese college students, and edited by the professors who guided them, in a style that makes even opaque concepts accessible. Ritualistic behavior is deconstructed in plain and precise language, in a conciseness that is also equally typical of the Japanese. It is organized into twenty-eight mostly interconnected chapters, though you can read them in any order you prefer. Some are perhaps too brief and would require explorations elsewhere for those serious inquisitors, still, like pieces to a puzzle, if you accurately connect them, they do render a thorough image in their totality. The editors, however, are careful to remind us that many of these topics continue to be debated and controversial even within Japanese society today. Nevertheless, the keen observer should, for example, be able to meld chapters like Uchi to Soto (literally translated as inside and outside), Honne to Tatemae (actual intentions and superficial words/actions, in a chapter I wished was more developed), Haragei (the implicit way of communication), Aimai (ambiguity), and Nemawashi (laying the groundwork) to better understand the Japanese "ways" in intercultural dealings and discern why they have often been regarded as remaining isolated inside their own country and outside of the responsibilities in world affairs that many would like to attribute to one of the world's strongest economic powers.
This book is filled with informative and insightful essays and should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in the Japanese mentality, for those who study the language, and for even those Japanese who have a good enough command of English and wish to understand and communicate more about their culture than the trite aspects that are so often regurgitated in films and popular pulp. At the end of each chapter there are discussion activities that not only probe further into the respective topic and often attempt to relate it to contemporary Japan, but should also help facilitate one of the main purposes of this project, intercultural dialogue leading to mutual understanding. Even if you are lucky enough to engage in these conversations with some Japanese be forewarned, like the many Americans who have a hard time explaining our traditions of Halloween or saying "(God) bless you" after a sneeze for instance, much in this book is so entrenched in and forms the undercurrent of normal everyday life in Japan that many Japanese have trouble recognizing and explaining it themselves. Kudos to both the Ehime University students and teachers for producing such a well-written, thought provoking, and helpful analysis--its value far exceeds its cost.

Not to technical, but still insightful and interesting.

Very neat book. Was a little less technical than I expected but not so much so as to not be interesting to read having little prior knowledge about Japanese culture. Some things they mention are obvious but the explanations and further inquiry into the topics are interesting enough. Also some say it just insults the culture but I disagree. It's definitely more focused on part of Japanese culture that are different from Western counterparts and aspects of Japanese culture the essay writers think are problems, but that's just the opinion and doesn't terribly effect the content. Overall if your looking for a causal read that will make you more informed about Japanese culture, this book could definitely be for you.
