The story of Islam viewed by a Western-educated Muslim

I have mixed feelings about Reza Aslan's 'No God But God'. I would say this is an easy-to-read account of the origins, evolution and prospects of Islam written from a confessional perspective. (Perhaps for this very reason) Although written by a scholar, it is not particularly scholarly. The author, after making a general caveat in the first pages of the book as to the distinction between reality and mythology, only exceptionally attempts to discern what may be true or false historically in the story of Muhammad, discarding such debates as ultimately "irrelevant". Also, don't expect to find here any critical objective analysis of the Quran. The author obviously considers it to be God's unaltered revelation and makes little attempt to point at its possible inaccuracies, incoherences or contradictions. Interestingly, he shows remarkably less reverence towards Biblical and especially Christian sacred texts.

The book is described not as another book on Islamic history but a book "for a popular audience about Islam as a religion". This description is misleading. This book is essentially about the history of Islam. If you're interested in a book about material issues concerning Islam as a religion (beliefs, practices, morality), look elsewhere.

Faced with the usual criticisms levelled against Islam (violence, women's oppression), quickly labeled as 'stereotypes' or 'clich�s', the author would have none and basically puts the blame on Western misinterpretations. In a sentence whose ambiguity is hardly worthy of a scholar, he even propounds that "It would seem, therefore, that the biggest obstacles in the path to creating a genuinely Islamic democracy are not only the Traditionalist Ulama or Jihadist terrorists, but, perhaps more destructively, those in the West who stubbornly refused to recognise that democracy, if it is to be viable and enduring, can never be imported".

Mr Aslan doesn't deal satisfactorily with certain important questions. Whereas he triumphantly states that one of the Quran's most fundamental principles is that there can be "no compulsion in religion", he is happy to blame the severe punishment of apostasy (which can carry the death penalty even up to this day in certain Muslim jurisdictions) on a regrettable historical association between 'apostasy' and 'treason'. He also justifies the appalling treatment of 'pagans' and 'polytheists' by merely alluding to the historical enmity between the Ummah and the Quraysh. Also, I was baffled by the assertion that the Quran does not accept the belief of "Orthodox Trinitarians who argued that Jesus was himself God. These Christians Mohammad did not even consider to be People of the Book". As far as I know, the overwhelming majority of Christians today would qualify as "Orthodox Trinitarians".

The book shows a particularly vicious anti-European bias and an annoying degree of Americocentrism. A whole chapter is dedicated to the evils caused by European colonialism in less than objective terms. For example, in dealing with the Indian rebellion of 1857, the author describes as a fact that the British had greased rifle cartridges with beef and pork fat, which would have been sacrilegious to both Hindu and Muslim troops. As it happens, this was no more than a widespread rumour but there is enough evidence to show that those cartridges were actually greased with a mix of linseed oil and beeswax. The book then goes on to explain that much of the violence found in Muslim countries in modern times is a result of the decolonisation process (involving, of course, European powers).

Mr Aslan, however, doesn't say a word about American economic or cultural neo-colonialism and its ambivalent effects on Islamic identity. Surprisingly, it doesn't even deal with the Israeli-Palestinian problem and what an overwhelming majority of Muslims view as America's unacceptable support for the Zionist cause (to be fair, there is one single mention of the "partitioning of Palestine and the resulting cycle of violence", but here again the blame falls on the European colonial powers). Not much attention is given to the devastating effects on West-Muslim relations of the American-led invasion of Iraq either. However, in a climax of Americocentrism the author proclaims "These days there is a tendency to regard American democracy as the model for all the world's democracies, and in some ways this is true. The seeds of democracy may have been sown in ancient Greece, but it is on American soil that they sprouted and flourished to achieve their full potential." Whereas the existence of such a trend is unsubstantiated (and contrary to my own perception), the pretence that America enjoys the world's most perfect democracy is plainly ludicrous (as, incidentally, is the suggestion that modern democracies have their roots in Ancient Greece).

I was shocked by the blatant assertion that "The fact is that the vast majority of the more than one billion Muslims in the world readily accept the fundamental principles of democracy". The author purports to support this 'fact' by reference to the "massive demonstrations by democracy activists throughout the Islamic world". Mass demonstrations are only that: mass demonstrations. They do not prefigure a representative democratic society. A willingness to respect minorities, abide by the rule of law and observe the democratic game is what is needed. The claim is highly naive, to say the least.

Although I am far from being an expert in the field under examination, I could nevertheless detect a number of obvious errors.

For instance, the author writes that "It is no accident that a few months after Muslim Spain fell to Ferdinand's Christian armies in 1492, most of the Jews were summarily expelled from the realm. The inquisition took care of those who remained." This short statement contains three errors. 1) The kingdom of Granada fell not to Ferdinand's but to the combined forces of Ferdinad and Isabella, with Isabella, not Ferdinand, accounting for the overwhelming bulk of troops and funds. 2) Jews were not summarily expelled. They were given the choice to convert to Christianity or leave the country. As a matter of fact, whether or not sincerely, a majority of Jews chose to convert. Harsh as this measure may seem it is more lenient than Muslim treatment of polytheists who, according to the author, "were given a choice between conversion and death". 3) The Inquisition did not deal with any remaining Jew since it had no jurisdiction over non-Christians. It dealt with crypto-Jews, ie those who had formally become Christians but continued to practice their original faith in private.

Also, the author uses the word 'religious edicts' as a translation for the Arabic 'fatwa' but this is grossly inaccurate. Edicts are proclamations, mostly of a general scope, with a binding effect. They can be qualified as instruments of legislation. 'Fatwas', particularly in the Sunni tradition, are opinions on specific points of law which rarely carry any binding effect. 'Opinions' or, perhaps, 'Rulings' would have been more appropriate translations.

Having said all this, I must admit that I found the chapter on Shiism highly instructive and the one on Sufism downright brilliant. I also enjoyed the author's lucid argumentation as to the prospects for Islam as it faces its own age of reformation. Therefore, all in all I would recommend reading this book but not as your first or only approach to Islam or the story of Muhammad.

The Story Of Islam

In his introduction, Reza Aslan defines religion as the "story of faith". By this definition, his book "No God but God" is the story of a story, and that is a good description. Mr. Aslan does a wonderful job of covering the history of the faith, both the mythological one and the historical one. He starts with the history of the region prior to the creation, and the conditions which helped shape Muhammad and the culture. I have read a couple histories of Islam and the Middle East before, but this one was much more accessible than the others, because Mr. Aslan is able to tell the story in a way which brings the story alive.

Another large section of the book is dedicated to talking about the different sects of Islam and what their differences are. This goes along with a history of the regions in which they developed and where they were adopted. This for me was probably the most important section of the book, because it is tremendously useful in understanding the mindset of the Sunni and Shi'ites, Sufis, and Wahhabi. This section is supported with many modern day examples which really help the reader to understand the differences.

There is also a section of the book which talks about what Islam really is. There is a lot of confusion these days over what is a part of the faith and what is not, and that confusion is certainly understandable after reading this book. It is also central to understanding how there can be such diverse interpretations even among Muslims of the same sect. The book closes with Mr. Aslan discussing the difference between secularism and pluralism. He shows how an Islamic state should by its very nature be pluralistic and could easily be a democracy founded on Islamic principals. His very optimistic finish is a declaration that "The Islamic Reformation is already here."

There are two smaller sections in this book where Reza Aslan relates some personal experiences. The first appears at the start of the introduction, where he discusses coming to the aid of two English speaking tourists and a train conductor in Morocco, which turns out to be a minor clash in cultures. The second is about his return to Iran after being taken away by his parents when he was very young. Both of these sections, although very short, really help the reader connect with the author. I would certainly be interested in seeing more of these types of stories included, to help make the text even more accessible than it already is.

It was brilliant with sinners at every turn

Let the sinning commence. The only sin I can think of is not reading this book. It was brilliant with sinners at every turn. The mother, the neighbour, the friend. September and Jesse's world is full of them. Two people that love each other with everything they have end up not being able to have what they most want in the world, each other.
Now if you've read book one in this fantastic series, you are not going to be able to put this book down.
Yes it's a complicated relationship but you tell me what relationships aren't. Forget who's related to who, there is no crime here, only love.
September is at college, meeting new friends, working hard and missing Jesse terribly. Jesse is working hard, ignoring the wife LOL, it's only on paper people, the woman abandon them all years ago, let's not forget. He is trying to forget all about September and failing miserably. He will always love her, that much is very clear.
The grandparents of September and Scout are desperate for Jesse and Sarah, formally known as Libby, to rekindle their love and give the marriage a second chance. Pfffft not in this life time. Sarah would jump at the chance but no way is Jesse that stupid. He is a caring, loving man but he no longer feels anything for her, she's Scout's mother and that's it.
September hates her mother with a passion and in all honesty she has valid reasons. I don't think she will ever forgive her.
God knows what the neighbour Casey is up to now, befriending Sarah, that woman wants Jesse all to herself, HA! another big fat NO. I think they are all forgetting one very important detail here, he's found real love and when that happens nothing can compare. So all the women that seem to be in heat around Jesse need to take a cold shower and quick. I just had mine haha!! Seriously the man is HOT!!
Them rip off your clothes moments melted my panties. He's got everything any woman would want in a man, hard working, great father, helps around the house, fun to be with, caring, loving, pleasing to the eyes and an exceptional lover. What more could a girl want? Oh yeah for him to divorce his wife, that might help.
September has yet another secret and Jesse is about to find out, giving September no option but to do as he says. Dominant Jesse is in the house, I love it.
Bless Scout she's a great kid, probably knows a lot more than she should but that's life. Sometimes it's best to be open and honest because you want your children to do the same.
September may have ended but the love in this story will last a life time. Happy smiles all round for a fantastic ending. I am now looking to see what other books this Author has written as her writing is off the charts epic. I recommend you pick up a book by Andrea Smith today. Thank you for once again for another awesome book.

This was a good sequel about Jessie and September's love story there was a lot of angst in this book and very emotional I was sweating there for awhile but love knows no bounds love doesn't see age or circumstance it just is and you can really see the love that these 2 had for each other definitely a beautiful HEA to this series well done Greyson :)

Carla's Five Star Review for When September Ends. If you have not read the first book in this series, Until September, you need to do that before reading this one to avoid confusion.

When September's mother reappears, September's world is thrown into a tailspin. Her mother is in Mississippi at her grandparent's home, and Jesse decides to take Scout, September's half sister, to see her. However, September refuses to go. While Jesse and Scout are gone, September moves out. This leads to a lot of confusion and pain for everyone involved. In the midst of dealing with his estranged wife along with September's grandparent's disapproval of his relationship with their granddaughter, Jesse must decide if their relationship is worth fighting for.

I was really excited to read more of Jesse and September's love story! I love the alternating pov's in this book because we got to see just what Jesse was thinking and feeling. I also hated Casey, the neighbor, and was so glad to see Jesse finally put her in her place! If you loved Until September as much as I did, you are sure to love this follow up! Brilliant work, Andrea!!

The goal is for you to move closer to be the person you want to be and to have less regret

This is a really good book, written by an executive coach, about changed behavior and regret.

A few concepts:

-Fate is the hand of cards we've been dealt. Choice is how we play the hand.
-Regret should be used to grow, embrace the pain and the message.
-We do not appreciate inertia's power over us.
-Meaningful behavioral change is hard.
-No one can make us change.
-Some people they want to change, but they don't.
-Achieving change is not necessarily easy but it may be easy.
-There is a difference between understanding and doing.
-We are superior planners and inferior doers.
-Change doesn't happen overnight.
-Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.
-If we make the effort, we will get better. If we don't, we won't

While these might sound like platitudes (and they are a little), the real wisdom is in the advice and examples.Solid advice given for implementing change and reducing regret in your life. A very good book that is potentially life-changing.

If you are good at setting goals but not that good at achieving them, then this is a must read. If you are a coach/mentor/leader that works with people to help them become a better version of themselves, then you will gain valuable insights from this book. You will learn valuable insights into what works and what doesn’t when it comes to changing human behavior.

It is okay to be skeptical about such bold claims. But consider the accomplishments of the author, Marshall Goldsmith. He is one of the most respected coaches in the world. Mr. Goldsmith works with the elite leaders in industry and government. One simple fact about the way he conducts his business should give you sufficient reason to trust everything he says about changing human behavior. His minimum time frame for working with clients is eighteen months. And he collects his fee at the end of the period. No results, no fee. That is a powerful testimony to his effectiveness.

While the title suggest that the book will be mostly about what triggers behavior, that is actually a rather small part of the points covered in this book. There are several very significant observations which will help the reader make changes that will last.

One insight is – “We are superior planners and inferior doers”. We make plans, set goals and fail to achieve them. If we hope to achieve the plans we make, we need structure. “We do not get better without structure.”

One of the key concepts of the book is that we should ask ourselves active questions on a daily basis. And, we need to track the answers. The active questions can start with “Did I try my best today to ____________________”. This introduced a concept that effort is more important than results. We can control our effort. Often there are factors beyond our control which influence the results. Most people will need a coach/mentor to hold them accountable to answering the questions and searching for reasons why the person is not giving their best efforts.

There are many other vital topics covered in the book. One of course is triggers – “Our inner beliefs trigger failure before it happens.” Another is the wheel of change – Creating – what we want in the future; Preserving the positive elements we want in the future; Eliminating the negative elements we do not want in the future and Accepting the negative elements we need to accept in the future.

There are some powerful one liners in the book – “We want short-term gratification while we need long-term benefit.

According to Mr. Goldsmith the purpose of the book is twofold. One is to create awareness – being awake/aware of what is going on around us. The second is to foster engagement so that we are actively participating in life.

If you are serious about changing your own behavior or truly helping others, then you will find a wealth of information in this book. But as Mr. Goldsmith points out the information is not worth much unless we become better doers. He gives the tools necessary for being a better doer. The work is up to you and your coach.

An Extremely Interesting, User-Friendly, Behavior-Changing Resource!

Advertising pays: I need to give a shout-out to Jim Kouzes for his posting the cover of Triggers on Facebook. Within thirty minutes of that post, I had ordered my copy!

This book deserves a mark that exceeds five stars. This book informed, it educated, it impressed, it entertained, and it induced action. I am in the fourth week of assessing my progress toward six personal, behavioral goals (patience, under-controlling of situations, less judgmental/evaluative, more lovingly supportive of my wife, more at peace, and in less of a hurry). I use the charting process suggested by Marshall, and I have created a weekly scoring sheet on which my wife is to give me grade my progress.

Readers might not be impressed with this process, but this is the first time that I have consciously and systematically worked toward important personal/interpersonal goal-improvement. As a licensed user of the MBTI, I have known since 1984 that I have needed to work on some of my ENFJ-behaviors that did not serve me well at times. Marshall’s coaching-in-the-book, his powerful examples of behavior change shared, and the usable resources all combine to compel a reader to take action and make personal progress, so that we might be more effective human beings.

After four weeks, this writer is a more peaceful, patient person from the beginning of each day. My wife and I are having more fun. My urge to “drive the bus” all the time has been significantly reduced, and I am in less of a hurry. Marshall’s focus on progress, I think has been key: “Did I do my best to . . .?” Over time, the focus has become a habit, like a good health habit! And, why not?! Yes, I’ll regress on a variable, and I’ll “own it” and simply choose to get back on the horse the next day and go forward.

Marshall gets it: He realizes that he cannot be effective unless his clients are! He is exemplary in this regard, and he relentlessly and proactively journeys toward being a better leader/coach.

Marshall also models brilliantly, a client-centered/collaborative coaching style as he works with others. He asks the necessary and provocative questions that others need to face if they are to be more effective going forward.

There was just one chapter that fell just a tiny bit short, for me personally. Chapter 16, “Behaving Under the Influence of Depletion”, deals with our behaviors and the outcomes of decisions made when our physical/mental/emotional energy is low. In addition to Marshall’s suggestions in this chapter, the reader might benefit from three topics that might help them and others be more personally effective: personality (introverts), mood theory, and general wellness. Introverts need to give extra time for reflection and self-care before entering their after-hours dwellings and interacting with others, even their pets. Introvert Power by Laurie Helgoe is just one book that offers practical suggestions for helping introverts be more personally/interpersonally effective. Helgoe specifically offers proactive ideas for helping deal with the current culture of interruption in our daily lives. For mood theory, The Origin of Everyday Moods by Robert Thayer provides resources and research that can make us aware on an hourly basis whether we are “tired” or “energized”. From that point, we can then determine what our next courses of action need to be to be for greater effectiveness going forward. For example, “extreme” extroverts who are tense-tired near the end of a workday are apt to say or do things that would likely not happen when filled with calm-energy. For overall wellness, Candace Pert’s book, Everything You Need to Feel Good, offers an insightful look at her personal journey regarding the successful resolution of health issues, the latest mind/body-research, and good recommendations regarding websites and authors whose contributions might be beneficial.

In Triggers, Marshall Goldsmith did everything possible to make real and positive behavioral differences for his readers. He certainly made differences that I think will be both positive and lasting for me and for those with whom I interact. Thank you, sir!
