Robin tells us not just the ins and outs of ...

Robin tells us not just the ins and outs of eating within a 10 mi. radius for a month but even more importantly about an island community coming to together to feed itself. This book is an inspiration for the future feeding of America. Perhaps it is a little premature since the supermarket shelves are still loaded with "food stuff" but if you want to eat organically and locally the time to start putting these farms in place is NOW. And, yes, the farmers need our blessings for the incredibly hard work they do and their commitment to producing food.

A powerful classic for the local food movement!

Vicki Robin is rapidly emerging as one of the most visible and most important advocates for food localization. It may take some time, but I feel that Blessing the Hands that Feed Us will become a classic in the local food movement. For eaters everywhere, this book is a gold mine of humor, wisdom, perspective (and great recipes). But for those of us who are committed to localizing the global food supply, Blessing the Hands That Feed Us is also a very useful book. This is one that we want lots of people to read!
In recent years, Vicki Robin has been a leader in relocalization—having founded a Transition Initiative on Whidbey Island in Washington, and serving on the board of Transition U.S. (a role that we shared briefly), which as she says opened up a pinhole of hope in her life. But it took the invitation of a local farmer to direct her attention and creative energies to local food. What began as a one-month experiment to live on a 10-mile diet led to an awakening that left her committing her passion and the rest of her life to working towards a simple and powerful vision, that “we can all provision our food needs regionally—if we commit to personal and political change.”
If humanity is to have a future that is both tolerable and resilient, on a planet where life can thrive, we must regain control over our food supply. We must recover our capacity to feed ourselves. And in the process we must regain our food sovereignty and food security, which have been almost completely lost over the last fifty years or so. All this is essential in securing the future of humanity and the viability of life on this planet.
Given what we now know, it is undeniable that what is urgently needed is a widespread revolution in the way humanity feeds itself. I loved this book! Interesting, inspirational, comforting and challenging, Vicki Robin has turned a subject we've been talking about for few years now into a fascinating direct and personal journey. Her earlier book, Your Money or Your Life, was a great help to me in getting connected to my core values and making changes in the way I spent my money, and understood the value of time. With this book, I feel she provides a very entertaining and readable account of her own next step, and what needs to be the logical next step for each of us, which is to make choices for a healthier connection to food, to each other and to the earth. Vicki chose to eat food sourced from within a ten mile radius of her home for a month as an experiment. She documents her journey. I was curious to read about how this was for her. I was delighted and surprised to find the book included so much more than just the experience of the 30 days. The preparation, finding sources for various essentials, the relationships and the people involved, the statistics and science about food sustainability, her own personal life stories and healing from cancer, recipes from excellent chefs, and some very funny passages as she faces her own food demons ... stories most of us can relate to. Learning to eat locally, and more healthily, and creating a community based food infrastructure is complicated and filled with tough choices. Vicki somehow makes it seem more personal and manageable. Even though I 'try' to eat locally and have been health food conscious for decades, I still learned a lot and felt inspired to do more, knowing that if we begin to make better choices at the local levels we can slowly turn our food world in a new more sustainable direction.
