It's ok, but ebook version has weird typos.

I bought the kindle version of this book a few months ago. It's not the end-all be-all of study guides, but it is a good resource.

However, around location 2389 of 15343, there is a strange diagram which makes no sense. The chapter is about RMAN, and while the diagram is supposed to be an example of retention policy configuration, the picture has a screenshot of some java code that isn't related to RMAN or Oracle database.

Despite the small size, this is an essential handbook into the thinking of a Witch Hunter for the warhammer roleplayer. It cleverly covers witch hunting tests and trials that ensuring that zealous witch hunting will never be far from paranoia. While not covering any particular warhammer rules this handbook will allow first and second edition witch hunters to carry on in their often over zealous hunt for Witches, Warlocks, Demons, Undead and anyone who may doubt the witch hunter's authority.

About the Author
Pat Libby is a management consultant to non-profits and philanthropies who views the work of nonprofit organizations through the kaleidoscope of her experiences as a long-time CEO, board member, academic and consultant to innumerable organizations.�Her 21-year consulting practice involves working with organizations to recruit executives, think and plan strategically, and find practical solutions to complex problems.

For 14 years until July 2015, she served the University of San Diego as the founding director of its Nonprofit Institute which comprises nonprofit-focused graduate programs, a research center and community education programs serving hundreds of people and organizations each year. The Institute is frequently cited as one of the nation’s premier academic centers dedicated to advancing the work of philanthropic organizations. �In creating the Institute, Pat realized a vision for an academic center that would interweave research, theory, and practice.

Her extensive executive management experience also includes 8 years as president/CEO of the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations. While there, she transformed a financially bankrupt organization into a nationally recognized model for statewide CDC associations, leveraging nearly $200 million for Massachusetts community development efforts in the process.�

Pat is also �the author of two books.�The Lobbying Strategy Handbook�(SAGE Publications, 2012), an engaging "how-to" guide for nonprofit practitioners who are seeking a simple blueprint for learning how to take part in the legislative process, and, with Laura Deitrick,�Cases in Nonprofit Management (SAGE 2016).

Margaret Oertig-Davidson is Scottish and has lived and worked in Switzerland since 1987, training business and professional people to communicate internationally. She has been a lecturer in the School of Business, University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) since 2002. She also works as a coach, specialising in advising young people in Switzerland on educational pathways that suit their interests and abilities. She lives near Basel with her Swiss husband and their two daughters.

Let's hear even more about the Swiss

When learning about another culture, insight and reassurance are often best conveyed by telling stories. Beyond Chocolate is essentially a book of highly instructive stories about living and working in Switzerland. The focus of the book is upon the German Swiss culture with occasional deviations into the French and Italian areas of the country where differences there merit attention.

Oertig-Davidson quickly demonstrates that she is both professional as an interculturalist and experienced in the ways of Swiss society. She does not omit some familiar intercultural boilerplate such as the metaphor of “peach and coconut” types of cultures and Hofstede’s four models of company culture in her interpretations of cultural interactions. Yet, it is clear that the active ingredients in her recipe are the stories that echo the flavors of the culture as tasted by the many expats and Swiss who recounted their experiences with each other.

One of the advantages of the testimonial approach is that the reader sees how values are created and experienced. Early on one has the fleeting sense that the book is mostly for expats concerned about family life, child rearing and the neighborhood expats will live in. Though the author suggests that some people might want to simply “dip into the business section,” I think that this would be a mistake. While there might be momentary merit in getting some quick clues about Swiss behavior, the earlier sections on family, upbringing and education and actually create mental matrix necessary to interpret behavior and respond appropriately in business situations.

When discussing how people “learn the rules” of social interation, for example, Oertig-Davidson researched the distinction made between the Swiss concept of “Anstand…a basic code of behaviour, based on the unwritten rules of society…: and “Politeness… ‘nice to have’, but not necessary…Anstand is when an elderly person drops some thing and a younger person picks it up. Politeness is when a younger person drops something on the floor and an elderly person picks it up. Rarely does an expat benefit from such a distinction in a new culture and we may, to our peril, miss basic behavioral codes, thinking them optional. Again the Beyond Chocolate backs the theoretical distinction with copious stories to help us understand its application.

Given the author’s Herkunft as an English teacher and her experiences training for communication, the book is particularly rich in cultural insights and examples that language itself provides. She exposes the clues to the cultural realities contained it words, expressions and modes of interaction. Chapter two contains a deceptively simple and thus brilliant section on involvement and independence. I wish that I had known years ago that my cultural assumption that “chatting up others” and treating strangers intimately was something peculiar to my own culture and not necessarily appreciated everywhere, and, may even be seen as highly unprofessional. “Swiss…,” she observes, “may not see the point in finding something in common with people they meet in passing and will never see again. (They also do not feel the need to know the first names of staff).” Similarly she observes how the Swiss German preference for the present tense to express the “future as fact” is not just a linguistic peculiarity but part of a paradigm for thinking and working that provides a certain confidence in the procedures one uses to get things done.

A welcome feature of the book for business readers is the author’s preparedness to occasionally comment on the practices and effects of virtual working. Since in many organizations today 80% or more of communication takes place via virtual media, being able to discuss the effects of these media on cultural patterns of communication is becoming a hallmark of an interculturalist’s relevance and credibility. Likewise, Oertig-Davidson does not make the common error of seeing culture as a museum but is also careful to point out current cultural shifts that seem to be underway in numerous aspects of thinking and behavior. Just as California roll is a common menu item in Tokyo sushi restaurants, global business in Switzerland is bringing about “fusion cooking” in many aspects of work and social life.

Perhaps as a result of working too often in Bruxelles, chocolate was not the first thing on my mind when seeing the title of this book about the Swiss. I think about banks. For me, the book, gem that is is, didn’t speak to my curiousity about two important issues. First, I would like to know more about how the Swiss think, feel and speak about specific crises vis-�-vis the EU and their shifting role in the world. This would include reactions to the financial issues coming to light about historical collaboration with National Socialism and current issues of banking secrecy. Secondly, I would like to hear more about the state of the many immigrant workers in Switzerland and the socio-cultural issues that they face and that others face in interacting with them. Obviously, one book cannot do everything, so I hope that this is not a manifestation of national denial about these issues, and that there is more to come.

Well-read students will note references to Greek mythology, the Bible, and to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (Houghton, 1967) interspersed with modern cultural allusions. King's forte, however, is characterization, and there is no shortage of it here. Good guys and evil are well developed, with a depth that makes them believable. Although Ralph is clearly identified as a septuagenarian, he is never stodgy or prudish, and will appeal to teens. Some of King's more recent novels, such as Gerald's Game (1992), have been disappointing, but Insomnia is closer to It (1987) and Needful Things (1992, all Viking) in its suspense and entertainment potential. Don't read the Amazon review!

There are many people for whom the book "Insomnia" will serve as a cure for the titular condition. It's an 800 page book that takes about 150 pages to start making sense -- the first quarter of the book is all strange goings-on with no exposition.
Our hero, an old man with a dying wife, begins loosing sleep and (he thinks) hallucinating. He can see auras around people, fields of light that change according to their mood and health and terminate in a long "balloon-string," their soul. And if that's not strange enough, he starts seeing three little bald men dressed as surgeons, who go around snipping people's strings.
It's all very psychedelic and intriguing, but I can see someone giving up on the book before it really gets rolling. Which would be a shame, because the plot kicks in around page 150 and it's a heck of a ride, all the more enjoyable if you don't know what's coming.
Suffice to say that this is the multiverse-hopping, cosmic guru King of The Stand and It, not the bare-bones King of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and Running Man (I like 'em both, if you were wondering). Insomnia is actually a better read than both The Stand and It, because it is more closely tied into the world as we know it. Most importantly, the characters are complex and believable, truly people worth knowing.
So if you've got the attention span and the physical strength to lift this book, definitely pick it up. It's a stone trip.

Second time around was much better

This has to be one of King's most misunderstood and underappreciated works. When I first read this in 1994, I was in my early twenties and didn't really connect with the older characters of this book. Now in my thirties, and not being as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I recently dusted off my hardcover and re-read this.
In my opinion this has to rank among the best King has done. Do not be fooled into thinking there is a lengthy diatribe about the abortion issue. King populates both sides of the argument with good and bad people. If anything, King's message is probably "leave it alone" which I guess can be interpreted that he supports women's choice, but he really doesn't browbeat his opinions through his book (unlike say Dan Brown in The Da Vinci Code).
I do think you have to be of a certain age to connect with the characters. Younger readers may not appreciate all the nuances regarding growing old that King conveys in this book.
More importantly, though, my second reading has made me realize how connected this book is with The Dark Tower series King is finishing this year. This might well be considered an ancillary Dark Tower book, as The Talisman, Black House, The Stand and now 'Salem's Lot (for Father Callahan) are.
Give this book a read. It isn't horror per se, as most of King's books aren't in the strictest definition of the horror genre. It is a well written book populated with characters you will care about for the duration of the book (and after!).

4 and 1/2 Stars, really...

Ralph Roberts, now there's a name I'll remember. We've been through a lot, Robert and I (oh, around 787 pages, I'd say), and I don't regret one moment. Sure, the first 200 pages aren't your typical Stephen King book, but I don't see this story NOT having those pages! Mr. King actually took a long time to set up his characters, and with good reason: you end up giving a damn about them, you feel their joy and echo their sorrow. But after around 200 pages, ahh, that's where the adventure really begins, when Ralph Roberts, who has been sleeping less and less, starts to see auras around everything. Just when you think that you have it pretty much figuered out, Mr. King throws you a nice curve ball and surprises you again. Not really a horror book, but an amazing read. Oh, and if you've read King's Dark Tower series, you are in for a special treat! Oh, and don't listen to the one star reviews, they must not of had the patience to get through the first 200 pages. 4 and a half stars!!

This is the tenth volume of a detailed study about the Silmarillion- era (Pre- Lord of the rings). No question from the silmarillion, is left unanswered after you've read this hyper-detailed book about the fallen ainur, Melkor, most known under the name Morgoth meaning "the enemy of the world". Here is described the rise of Arda, the assignments given by Eru, the lord of all, to the ainur (or the Valar in their earthly presence), AND how Melkor (who was Eru's favorite and most skilled of all) fell from grace and lusted to control the earth and everything in it. In this book , you will find how immensely great was Morgoth's power and how he could even distort Eru's very designs in the birth of the universe. It also includes detailed information about particular elven kings, half elven and men, who had a particularly important role in the history and shaping of Beleriand and Middle-earth. a lot of readers of the silmarillion felt that many details werent sufficiently explored and found the story hard to follow. Morgoth's Ring provides the 'in depth' look required to further appreciate the silmarillion. All fans of middle-earth and fantasy are urged to get this superb annal of the history of middle-earth and dive once more into the realm of the tree-light gems...

Drafts of 'The Silmarillion' Part I

'Morgoth's Ring' and 'The War of the Jewels' are both collections of draft material which would become the postumously published 'The Silmarillion'. In that sense, they stand in the same relation to 'The Silmarillion' as Volumes VI through IX of 'The History of Middle Earth' stand to 'The Lord of the Rings'. The difference is that while Tolkien senior himself published LotR, 'The Silmarillion' was incomplete at the time of Tolkien's death, so these are commentaries on an imcomplete work. If, like me, you compulsively buy everything with Tolkien's name on it, this will make no differnce. But, if, like me, you find the story of the Valar and the origins of the elves in general to be the most interesting part of 'The Silmarillion, then you will find 'Morgoth's Ring' the more interesting of the two volumes. In the end, both volumes add more pieces to that great, but slightly ephemeral quality of deep historicity which makes LoTR and 'The Hobbit' stand head, shoulders, and chest above virtually every other fantasy fiction ever written.

the things you always thought about but never found in the silmarillion

I grew up on tolkieniana: I cannot rememer the first time I read JRRT's works, but I cannot have been more than a few feet tall. tolkien's universe is so unseparable from my own that at times I look at the falling oak leaves around me and think that they are mallorn. no other bookworld is as real to me as his: no other fictional history is as historical as his.

the morgoth's ring is probably the least read piece of tolkien lore, and for good reasons. it is hard to get your hands on (had it not been for peter jackson's movies, it would probably not exist in paperback), and is considered to be one of christopher tolkien's shadiest amalgamations of facts. the criticism is valid, however, the morgoth's ring answers questions I have pondered for years. a lot of the gaps in the silmarillion can be filled out, or at least lessened, by information collected in this volume. although a strange compilation of notes to a tolkien novice, to a tolkieniast it is of great value. thus, I strongly recommend it to a more tolkien-educated audience.
